Restart.

I’m hitting the big ole’ RESET button on my life. Well, that’s a bit dramatic. It’s more like I’m hitting a reboot button, like when you turn your wifi off wait a couple of seconds and then turn it back on again because you had lost the connection or the internet was slower than usual. Does that make sense?

49724a6aef176c6d4176e9f4be6e28a548af62f1

I hope so. Long story short there’s been a lot of change in my life in the past six months, most of it is fantastic some of it less so- but that’s the essence of life I suppose. Sorry, digression.

tenor

I’m cleansing my body of the three most toxic things I put into it: alcohol, processed sugar, and Diet Coke. The first one I’ve had an interesting relationship with since college where I felt I had to drink to be able to have fun or let go, I would drink to relieve the mounting stress I imposed on myself daily to achieve high academic marks, I would drink to help me forget some of the things that made me sad or angry. This was, and is a horrible relationship with alcohol. Happily that is no longer the relationship I have with alcohol (that isn’t to say I don’t overdue it occasionally and then suffer, OH do I SUFFER, the next day).

giphy

My typical consumption is a glass of white wine at dinner, or during the summer I enjoy a strong gin and tonic with a FULL LIME in it for good measure because-scurvy… Anyway I am giving up alcohol this month because I want to a) prove to myself that I can stop drinking full stop, b) I am a creature of habit and I don’t want alcohol to become a habit in my daily life, and c) alcohol promotes unhealthy weight gain plain and simple, and that is the opposite of what I am trying to do.

Sugar is the devil.

Some fats are actually really good for you.

oprah-what-gif-oh-really

These are two things that I have had to learn after years of being told “fats are bad for you and make you retain weight” and “need some instant energy? Have something with sugar in it!” UGH, it makes me SO ANGRY.

tumblr_nx6vivqcbM1sqoxfvo1_500

Anyway, I’m working on making changes in my life towards becoming a healthier me (I know, I know- where’s my cover on Women’s Health) and one of the simplest changes I could instantly make was cutting out refined sugar. And let me tell you, that stuff us in EVERYTHING. I’ve already wanted something sweet 11 times today and 9 times yesterday, this is going to be difficult for me but I know it will pay off. I hope. Dear god I hope…

Diet Coke, my love, the reason I survive.

swooning

I am unhealthily dependently addicted to the sweet sweet nectar from the silver can. This is exactly why quitting cold turkey is the only way I can kick my addiction. I have been known to polish off a 12 pack in 36hrs, I have also been known to polish off a full liter of Diet Coke in one sitting. This is unhealthy my friends, so bloody unhealthy. So I’m giving it up, at least for the short term to allow my body to recalibrate and to see what I will feel like when I’m not pumping it full of artificial colors and flavors.

So there’s the plan, give up the three unhealthiest things I put into my body daily and see how it goes for a month. It’s gonna suck at some points and I know I’m gonna want to quit at least once per day. Here’s the thing though, if I don’t succeed in what I’m trying to do the only person I’m really hurting is myself. I’m doing this little experiment in order to start the summer off on the right foot by finally caring about what I put into my body. You know the saying “your body is a temple and you should treat it as such?” Well it’s kinda bullshit. Beau Taplin writes:

“Listen to me, your body is not a temple. Temples can be destroyed and desecrated. Your body is a forest—thick canopies of maple trees and sweet scented wildflowers sprouting in the underwood. You will grow back, over and over, no matter how badly you are devastated.”

This is honestly one of the most beautiful things I have read recently and made me rethink how I treat myself from the ground up.

So, here’s to the first month of regrowth.

Blogmas Day 8: Christmas Tag Q&A

1. Do you do anything to countdown to the day?

I have a Milkybar chocolate advent calender which always brightens up my day, as well as this year participating in Blogmas! I also attend church, so the weekly lighting of the advent candles is a nice way to countdown to the day.
2. When do you put up your Christmas tree and/or other decorations?

We normally put up the tree after the first weekend in December, and then we decorate it whenever the whole family is together.
3. What goes on top of your tree?

An Angel, I don’t know where we got her from but she is beautiful and has a crimson dress with gold piping and gold wings.
4. What do you eat for your Christmas meal and when do you eat it?

So, for Christmas breakfast we have scrambled eggs with bits of pan crisped ham, sticky buns and orange juice. For Christmas dinner we have tenderloin (ugh yasssss), mashed garlic potatoes, oven roasted green beans and for dessert we have a ‘mud pie’ which is peppermint stick ice cream with an oreo crumb crust and hot fudge sauce.
5. Do you have any meal time traditions (eg. crackers, playing a game etc.)

At the end of Christmas dinner we give each other one last gift, and it’s always a book.
6. Do you leave anything out for Santa? If so what?

Yes!! Shortbread cookies and a small glass of milk (and some carrots and celery sticks for the reindeer).
7. When do you open your gifts?

We open our stockings first thing in the morning, and then after we have breakfast we open presents one by one, and this process can take until 5pm!
8. What’s on top of your Christmas list?

I don’t really have a Christmas list, but I always love getting nice socks and new books.
9. Do you go to any Christmas services? Religious or otherwise?

Our Church does a 7.30pm and an 11pm service and I love going to those, the 7.30pm one because everyone goes then and we sing all of the classic Christmas songs and the 11pm one because it has this heartbreaking beautiful quiet that goes along with it, its simple and a perfect way to transition into Christmas day.

10. What is your favorite Christmas film?

This one is easy, A Muppets Christmas Carol.

11. Have you ever had a White Christmas?

Most of my Christmases have been white, I live where snow is a regular occurence in December.

12. What is your favorite Christmas song?

It’s a tie between “All I Want For Christmas is You,” “Silent Night” and “The First Noel”

13. Do you open any presents on Christmas Eve?

One, it’s our tradition to open one present after Christmas Eve dinner.

14. Is your Christmas tree real or fake?

FIRST THINGS FIRST IT’S THE RULLEST

15. What is your all-time favorite holiday food/sweet treat?

Peppermint Hot Chocolate- literally if I could sit in a bathtub of peppermint cocoa I would without second thought. I think I either buy one or make one every day after Thanksgiving.

16. Be honest: do you like giving gifts or receiving gifts better?

I like giving gifts, I like putting time and effort into getting gifts for people and wrapping them. Whenever I get a gift I don’t really know what to do with my body, I should probably work on that.

17. What would be your dream place to visit for the holiday season?

Edinburgh, that city in the winter is my favorite place. It’s my favorite place in general but with the German Christmas Markets and beautiful lights and general holly jolly spirit it’s pretty much the most magical place in the world.

18. Are you a pro-present wrapper, or do you fail miserably?

PRO-MUTHAHTRUCKIN’-WRAPPER. I go all out with my wrapping, this year I bought brown wrapping paper and I’m going to illustrate it myself.

19. Do you make New Years resolutions? Do you stick to them?

I used to but I think they’re kinda pointless. I understand the concept but I never seem to keep them if I make them. I tend to just make resolutions during the year.

20. Peeking at gifts or be surprised?

Surprised! Although I am super guilty of tag reading, but I don’t think that counts as peeking…

21. Do You Like To Stay in Your PJs Or Dress Up For Christmas?

PJs ALL day, like I measure the success of my Christmas by how long I can stay in my PJs. For Christmas dinner however we all get dressed up to the nines, but then pretty much immediately after we are done cleaning up its back into PJs.

These questions were pieced together from a bunch of different Christmas Q&As, feel free to answer down below in the comments! I know it’s a switch up from the usual kind of post, but I thought it might be fun to try something like this!

Bearded Princesses

So, weird title amiright???

You may be wondering what the heck it means, well it’s the title of a folder on my desktop. This is the folder I turn to when I need a chuckle or a laugh. I can’t recommend enough keeping a folder of things that make you happy or smile, and it’s an added bonus if you can name it with a weird or quirky title so that even reading the name of the folder brings you joy. Here are 30 of the literally hundreds of .jpgs and .gifs that make me chuckle and hopefully they’ll make you laugh as well.
